Chipping with Hybrids….
By Tom Ream, PGA Head Instructor
at the Pinewild Golf Academy in
Pinehurst, NC.
Chipping with Hybrids has become
very popular on all of the
Professional Tours and is
beginning to filter down to the
every day golfer. You should
consider a hybrid when you have
a lot of green to work with,
when you have to travel up/over
slopes or when the ball is
sitting just off the fringe in
the semi tall rough.
The set-up for this type of shot
is your putting set-up. I would
also encourage you to “Think
Putt” when performing this
shot. The reason for this is
that we want the club to travel
level through impact instead of
hitting down on the ball; this
allows the ball to get up on top
of the turf and then roll like a
putt. Additionally, Hybrids
tend not to get caught up in the
longer rough at the impact area,
as opposed to other irons.
Hitting down on the ball imparts
a lot of back spin which creates
another variable that you have
to manage
Set up:
1.
Feet & shoulders parallel to the
target
2.
Ball position just forward of
center
3.
Putting grip
4.
“Think Putt”
