Pitching set up/philosophy….

By Tom Ream, PGA Head Instructor at the Pinewild Golf Academy in Pinehurst, NC.

Pitching Philosophy:

Pitching is flying your ball over a slope or bunker back onto the front of the green and then, like chipping, choosing the proper club that allows the ball to roll (or not roll) the rest of the way to the hole.

Pitching Set Up:

Grip position...Conventional grip

Grip pressure...Soft but in control

Stance width...Outside of feet shoulder width

Stance alignment...Square to 2 inches open

Weight distribution...50/50

Knee flex...Slight flex

Posture...Tilt from hips

Arm position...Hang naturally from shoulders

Ball position...Just forward of center

Club position...Club face square, shaft perpendicular to body

Stroke motion...Arcs around body using hands, arms & shoulders.

[Pace and length equal & Length of swing dictates wrist hinge]

Body...Head & body quiet in back swing

[Sternum follows club in forward swing]

Theory...More lofted clubs while still trying to roll ball to hole.
