Simplifying Sand Play…. reducing variables….

By Tom Ream, PGA Head Instructor at the Pinewild Golf Academy in Pinehurst, NC.

The traditional set-up for sand play has almost always been to:

1...Open up your stance (45 degrees)

2...Open up your club face (45 degrees)

3...Swing along your body lines

4...Dig in

5...Place 60% of your weight on your left side

6...Swing down steeply into the sand

7...Don’t let the club face release

8...Thump the sand

9...Hit two inches behind the ball

10...Hit four inches behind the ball

11...Take a dollar bill sized divot

DELETE, DELETE, DELETE!!!!

Let’s simplify your bunker game:

1...Dig in so that your feet are below the level of the ball

2...Ball position just forward of center.  The club will bottom out in the middle of your stance without any conscience thoughts about where to impact.

3...Make your normal swing.

That’s it, that’s all there is to it…..now don’t be afraid of the sand anymore!
