Trajectory and spin are the
keys to distance control in
pitching…
By Tom Ream, PGA Head
Instructor at the Pinewild Golf
Academy in Pinehurst, NC.
Like with most shots in golf the
key to distance control is
learning to control the
trajectory and spin rate of your
pitch shots. Most players try
to hit all of their pitches with
lofted clubs (LW or SW). This
choice of club is correct when
the pin is on the front of the
green but when pins are located
in the middle or back of the
green less loft is a more
practical choice. The solutions
are to only fly your ball as far
as the front of the green and
then choose the correct club
that allows the ball to roll to
the hole.
Factors involved in
trajectory & spin:
1.
Loft or club selection….the less
loft chosen reduces both spin &
trajectory.
2.
Swing length….making longer
swings with lofted clubs creates
greater height.
3.
Carry distance….flying the ball
too far requires longer swings.
The next time you go to the
practice green work on hitting
pitches over bunkers with less
lofted clubs (9 or 8 iron), this
will allow you to carry the ball
back on the front of the green
and allow it to roll back to the
pin.
Mental note...You may feel as if
you are hitting a chip shot over
a bunker.
