PINEWILD COUNTRY CLUB PERSPECTIVE

PINEWILD MEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION

The PMGA 2003 Season Finale will be held on Friday, November 14th, with our traditional Breakfast at 7:30 am & following Business Meeting, Golf and the annual Awards Reception following golf. This year, we will hold a Special Meeting preceding our regular Business Meeting to consider revision of our by-laws.

The revised by-laws will be posted in the locker room and on the website beginning October 31st, 2003 for your review. Should you have any questions regarding the changes proposed, please contact the chairman of the 2004 Nomination committee via e-mail at pekauffman@mindspring.com . The comment period is from October 31st, 2003 to November 10th, 2003.

For those unable to attend, Absentee ballots will be available in the golf shop. Seal the completed, unsigned, Absentee ballot in a small envelope and seal the small envelope in a large envelope with your name on it addressed to the PMGA nominating committee. To be counted, the Absentee ballot must be returned by Thursday November 13th, 2003 and sealed in this manner by 5:00 pm.

We are expecting a large turnout and are planning to accommodate everyone at breakfast, the Business meeting and Awards reception and 180 for golf. Sign-up in the locker room begins on October 31st, 2003.

PINEWILD WOMEN’S GOLF ASSOCIATION

Congratulations to our last Ace of the Day, Judy Mills with her outstanding 79 gross. The competitors for this years “Queen of the Hill” tournament were Amy Higgins, Talie Tuffnell, Pat Milburn, MaryAnn Smith, Shirley Wake, Marie Gilbertson, Carole Roth, Paula Montgomery, Joan Vincent and Debbie Regula. Chris Robertson bestowed the "coveted" crown on Carole Roth who just edged out Pat Milburn. The big ceremony will take place at out closing luncheon.

Last month Sue Wilson had her personal best, but she was hot again this month and broke her record with a 90 on the Holly. Low rounds were also had by Debbie Regula and Mary Ann Smith…and how about Amy Higgins having an Eagle on #5 Magnolia. It takes me that many to reach her drive!!!

Our team matches are over now and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the ladies who supported our teams this year.

Winners for Pinetops at Foxfire were: Flight 2…Talie Tuffnell with 2nd Low Net, Flight 5…Diana Santilli with 1st Low Gross, Flight 7…Phyllis Clark with 1st Low Gross and Hester Ham with 1st Low Net and Flight 11…Jean Vincenti with 1st Low Net

Our Pinetops team came in 4th place for the season. The last Tar Heels was played at Cape Fear CC in Wilmington. Seventeen ladies played in the rain and wind, but a fun time was had by all.

Winners were: Flight 1…Ginger Lash with 1st Low Gross and Judith Kelley with 2nd Low Net, Flight 3…Gay Strojny with 1st Low Net, Flight 4…Jean Dix with 1st Low Gross and Flight 6…Carol Smith with 2nd Low Net.

Then there is always the shopping contest afterwards, I usually win but I didn't even place this year!  I hope to see some more girls come out and play in this fun competition next year…they are looking for some new clubs to join also. Our Interclub team finished in 3rd place for the year.

The Halloween event has filled up fast and promises to be as much fun as last year. Carol Smith and Kathy Lannon have a great lunch in store and there will be prizes for the costumes. November 11th is the last “guest day” for the year. Again Amy and Norma have put together a special day for our friends.

If you haven't noticed by now, there is a new poster in our locker room. Since there are so many ladies playing golf and this year we had about 16 new faces, we as a board thought it would be nice to be recognized. Pat Milburn did a great job in painting the golf bag. Many thanks go out to Linda Critzer and Janet Waters for assembling the pictures.

I would like to welcome new members Cindy Edgar and Nancy Reutter. Just a friendly reminder that you can still join the Hole-in-One Club. Please mark your calendars for our closing luncheon on December 2nd. I wish to thank the nominating committee, chaired by Linda Bell for working so diligently to come up with a slate for next year.

It has been my great pleasure to serve as your President this past year. I have had a hard working board who were very conscientious of all our members. I extend many thanks also to my chairwomen who helped make for a very successful year, and I especially want to thank all of you for helping me get through a difficult year with my husband. Your cards, prayers and encouragement have meant a lot to me. Good luck to next year's board and thanks again to: V.P.: Gayle Welter, Secretary: Sue Lambert, Treasurer: Shirley Ray, Tournament: Amy Higgins, Assist. Tournament: Norma Hyland, Social: Kathy Lannon, Members at Large: Carol Smith & Lucille Casey and Past President: Linda Critzer

LADIES’ OF THE EVENING…GOLF

2003 has been a fun year for the “Pinewild Ladies of the Evening”. The LOE is a group of ladies who get together on Thursday evenings and play 9-holes of golf. Alternatively, we go out to dinner when it rains. There are no yearly dues and you are invited to join in the activities. Everyone who plays brings a dollar and half the proceeds will be given to the winner of the evening’s game and the remainder of the proceeds is given to a local charity. This year the donations will be given to the Coalition for Human Care.

The LOE will close out the year with their second annual Christmas party on Thursday, December 11th at 6:30 p.m. at the home of Martez Norris. All ladies who are interested in learning more about the group are invited to join in the fun. For further information on the Christmas Party…contact, Martez Norris at 295-0833 or Gloria Tanner at 910.215-8086.

Martez Norris and Gloria Tanner enjoyed serving as Chief Fun Officers for the past year. The new CFOs for 2004 are Nancy Davis and Sue Wisniewski. We look forward to hearing from other Ladies who would like to join our group.

It was a great year…happy to see so many of you each week and hope to see more of you next year. We'll get together again officially in the Spring!!

Ed Bohlender presented the League with a "traveling" trophy which will be presented each year to the in-coming President by the out-going President. Ed found the trophy among Hope's treasures and knew it would be special for us to keep for years to come in her memory.

CLUB NEWS...

We have had some great “mild summer” weather this fall…what a contrast to last year when October was so wet following the extremely hot & dry summer of 2002. We deserve this weather folks, let’s hope it lasts through February.

Mark your Calendar - Friday December the 12th is the date for the MEMBER'S SHOPPING PARTY where you can get some great deals on gifts for Christmas from the Golf Shop. The frenzy will start at 4:00PM, with the Social-Two hour starting at 5:00PM.

Congratulations to the winners of the 2003 President’s Cup/Club Championship, they were as follows:

Men’s Club Champion – Duaine Robertson – 225 [3 rounds gross] one stroke ahead of Mike Critzer

Men President’s Cup – Mike Critzer – 137 [2 rounds net]

Ladies’ Club Champion – Judy Mills – 253 [3 rounds gross] five strokes ahead of Diane Vosilus

Ladies’ President’s Cup – Judy Mills – 142...winning in a scorecard playoff over Diane Vosilus

Thanks to all the participants, it was a great event because of your support

Pinewild has had another extremely busy year, with numerous very successful events and great member participation – Thank You for your support. The calendars for 2004 will be mailed to the membership during the first part of December.

With the onset of the colder winter months...please pay attention and respect the "Court Closure" signs on the Tennis Courts. As the courts are freezing and thawing throughout the day, we want to eliminate any chance of damage to the courts.

Join us for the Pro-Member on the 18th of November…This will be an eighteen-hole Pro-AM which will be contested over the Holly Course. The shotgun will commence at 10:30 AM, and teams will consist of (Male or Female) – One CPGA Professional, One Pinewild Member, and Two Guests. The Entry Fee is $70.00 per Person, and includes All Golf related charges, Lunch, Member Breakfast/Drawing Party on Tuesday the 18th before golf [at 8:30am]. The Sign-up is located in the clubhouse. It is a great event, and we look forward to seeing you there!

On behalf of ownership and the entire Pinewild Country Club of Pinehurst staff, we wish you and yours a safe and joyous Holiday Season.

Christopher Little, PGA
Club Manager

ADVISORY BOARD MINUTES

The Advisory Board held its’ Annual Meeting on October 2nd, 2003…Highlights were as follows:

-          Thanks to all the members who participated in the Member/Guest…it was successful

-          Unfortunately the Harvest Fest had to be canceled

-          We will start with a Ranger program on the Azalea on selected days…ask members to check-in in the golf shop prior to playing any of the courses

-          Due to all the work that needed to be done to the course following the hurricane in September, the Solheim Cup, PMGA play, and all other play had to be cancelled

-          The courses will once again do approximately 68,000 rounds for the year

-          This fall some of the fairways will not be overseeded with rye; the fairways are…Holly - #2, #6, #11, #16 and perhaps #14 and Magnolia - #2, #8, #16 and #17…to protect the turf on these fairways during the growing season, cart path only restrictions may be put in place

-          The Holly greens are cut at .145 and added that the greens are never “shaved” down abruptly as some members think. The Magnolia greens are currently being cut at .180.

-          A question was raised concerning 1) the ratings of both courses and the effect on member handicaps; and 2) the handicap number assigned each hole. Christopher Little told the group that the last USGA course rating was completed approximately three years ago and the handicapping of individual holes was revised based on the USGA rating process. The courses are next due for a rating one and one-half to two years from now and the handicapping of the holes will be revisited then.

-          Blue Jeans Policy: Jeans are not permitted in the clubhouse and dining facilities. Management will reiterate this policy to the Members and let them know the Staff’s instructions for dealing with the situation when it comes up.

-          Heart Healthy Menu Options: There are “Heart Healthy” options on the regular lunch menu. Chef Todd will try to see that at least one “Heart Healthy” option is included for “event” meals. Chef Todd also pointed out Members with special needs should call him whenever they would like to eat at the club and he will attempt to accommodate them whenever possible.

-          Clubhouse Renovations: Chris Little reported that management plans to update and renovate the clubhouse in mid to late January.  This will require that the clubhouse be closed for approximately two weeks.
