PINEWILD COUNTRY CLUB PERSPECTIVE
PINEWILD MEN’S GOLF ASSOCIATION
The PMGA one-day Member Guest tournament was held on the 22nd of June. The event consisted of a continental breakfast, two-man better-ball golf tournament with a shootout on the 18th hole of the Holly Golf Course, followed by a cookout.
Flight winners were:
Flight 1…Lou Roth and Charles Wilson
Flight 2…Miles Baldwin and Ron Winter
Flight 3…Don Hamilton and Dale Skinner
Flight 4…J.C. Norman and Mark Norman
Flight 5…Dick Meadows and Ed Williford
The overall winner determined by the shootout was the team of Dick Meadows and Ed Williford. Thanks to event chairman Walt Kaczynski for his efforts in making this a highly successful event.
An away game was held at Mid Pines on July 11th. First place was taken by the team of Ted Davison, Duane Barlow, Bill Kennedy, and Gordon Esch. The team of Bob Watt, Bill Caso, Gary Petersen, and Gene Casnelli finished second with Cliff Hickey, Pat Bresnahan, Dave Blessing, and Tom Jones finishing third.
The Pinewild men continue to lead the interclub series. Standings after the fifth match at Hyland Hills on July 10 are:
Pinewild 2921, Foxfire 2925, Woodlake 2939, Beacon Ridge 2947, Pinehurst Resort & Country Club 3001, Carolina Trace 3033, Seven Lakes 3052, Hyland Hills 3064 and Whispering Woods 3114
Congratulations to the flight winners in the Holly Challenge and Blazer tournaments. Inter-flight matches will begin in August and continue through September.
Congratulations to Larry Perkinson for a hole-in-one on the 17th hole of the Holly course, Austin sweet for a hole-in-one on the 3rd hole of the Holly course, and Tony Munday for a hole-in-one on the 12th hole of the Magnolia course. As PMGA hole-in-one club members, each received a $200 cash award. Also congratulations to Charlie Weaver for shooting his age (73) and Jack Heimann for a double eagle on Holly eleven.
The PMGA extends a warm welcome to new member Greg McDuffie.

It is hot and humid out there, particularly so in the afternoon. Just a reminder, the signs of heat exhaustion include paleness, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, fainting, and a moderately increased temperature. The best prevention is to keep yourself well hydrated, so drink plenty of water when you’re on the course and other times as well. If you develop any of the above signs (or notice your playing partners exhibiting any of the signs), GET OFF the course, go inside to cool down and re-hydrate!
Our fifth and sixth ‘Ace of the Day’ are Marilyn Zimmerman with a net 60 and Sandra Schnare with a net 59. Grace Hill and Suzanne Wright are the alternates.
We had a wonderful turnout for our Informal Guest Day. Unfortunately the weather did not cooperate. What a wash out. Our next Informal Quest Day is October 5th. Let’s start wishing now for good weather.
Speaking of weather, due to the hot days, we have been experiencing a considerable number of late cancellations and no-shows, particularly for afternoon play. This causes problems not only for the Golf Shop but for other PWGA members. If you are need to cancel after the pairings are posted, call the Golf Shop immediately and someone in your foursome so they are not waiting for you. When you sign-up to play, other PWGA members are counting on you to be there. Even a few late cancellations or no-shows can spoil the day for many others. Please be considerate and let’s all enjoy our PWGA play days!
August 10th is our second “Pick-a-Partner” play day. Grab someone you don’t ever get a chance to play with and get to know them.
Remember to sign-up for Pinetop at Pinehurst on August 14th. Don’t forget Tarheel at Wilson on August 17th.
Remember, the PWGA only functions through the efforts of its membership. Chairing a committee or a special event is not only your way to help, it’s a great way to support the organization and meet and work with a lot of great women. Let Carole Roth (or any board member) know what you are interested in volunteering to chair/co-chair.
Everyone get out there and swing it. Whether the shot is straight or errant, just have fun.

NINE HOLE LADIES GOLF LEAGUE…(AKA, NINE AND DINE GROUP)
Hi everyone, thanks to Mother Nature’s kindness, we were able to have our make-up game for the Husband and Wife Tournament. On June 28th about half of the original field of players [eighteen couples] played a fun round of golf. As usual, the husbands were allowed to use only 2 clubs plus a putter and their pink ball [very few complaints about the PB this year]. Following the round we all headed to the Rantala compound to celebrate the outcome. Congratulations to our winners…
First Place: Marilyn and Fred Zimmerman, Julie and Tom Jones
Second Place: Fran and Jim Mellios, Barbara and Dan Vincenti
Third Place: Norma and Ron Johnson, Pat and Jack Finnerty
Closest to the Pin for Women: Marilyn Zimmerman (much to the dismay of Judy Block)
Closest to the Pin for Men: Denny diDonato
The Nine-Hole ladies wish to thank the courageous husbands that were willing to go the distance for this fun activity.
Next on the agenda is the Nine/Eighteen Hole tournament to be played in September. Look for the sign-up sheet in the ladies locker room. This is a popular event and the list fills up quickly.
Our regular Tuesday golf is going very well. This past month our membership rose to 100 golfers. I believe this is the most players our league has ever had. So, if any of you are interested in joining this great group of women who love having fun while golfing, and love eating together after the round…call Sue Rantala at 910.215.4518.
In the meantime, remember, no peeking when putting.
Sue Wisniewski

NEWS, NEWS & MORE NEWS…
The Pinewild Member/Guest is scheduled for the middle of September. Information is available from the Golf Shop or via the Internet – www.pinewildcc.com in the “Members” section under “Club News”…”Golf”. This is always a great event, which is well attended – get your entry in early.
The Renovation of the front nine of the Magnolia course is going well, with almost all of the holes “shaped out”. We do expect to have the greens on all nine holes ready for seeding by the 1st of September. We are very excited about the changes, and continue to receive numerous positive comments from those members who have been following the progress. We are anticipating opening the new nine in the middle of November 2006, then shutting it down for the winter, with the entire Magnolia 18 open for play at the end of February…for good.
Do not forget…on August 31st, the Advisory Boards Annual Meeting & Election will be held at Clubhouse at 7PM. We encourage you to attend, and take this opportunity to stay involved and informed with Club issues.
On or around the 8th of August, ballots with the candidates for election to the Advisory Board will be available in the Clubhouse Foyer. Please keep an eye-out for the ballots and cast your vote for the six new members.
We have many events planned as we move into the cooler fall months; we look forward to seeing you at as many of these events as possible, and as always…thank you for your support of Pinewild Country Club of Pinehurst.
Club Manager, Christopher Little
